1405 to 1433 |
Over fifty
years before the first Portuguese caravels traversed the southern tip of
Africa in 1488, fleets of hundreds of immense Chinese junks brought under the
Chinese tributary system the vast periphery of the Indian Ocean, and may have
sailed further. But a dramatic reversal of naval policy meant that, less than
a century afterwards, it was a crime to even go to sea from |

Ex- Royal
Navy commander Gavin Menzies here makes the startling but not impossible
assertion that the massive fleet of more than 100 junks, previously thought
to have confined itself to the Indian Ocean, actually circumnavigated the
globe during these years and established coastal outposts in the Americas and
elsewhere, accounting for the proliferation of accurately detailed world maps
at an early date. See also the site "Chinese seapower in the fifteenth
century" which may corroborate some of Menzies' points. |

Chilean naval power |
After Chile's independence, she quickly became
the leading naval power in South America, But following a long period of
peace this advantage was eroded. In 1865 Chile supported Peru in her war with
Spain, but After the Spanish had Bombarded Valparaiso, It became evident that
Chile needed a strong navy to protect her long Coastline. Her Navy was re
organised and re built by the Time of her “War of the Pacific” with Peru.
This war was mostly fought at sea, the first time that modern "Iron Clad
" Battleships has been used. Some small naval ship to ship engagements
took place, including the Capture of the Peruvian Battleship Huascar
and the destruction of the Independance. The War was a total success
for Chile and proved her naval superiority in South America in the 1870's and
1880’s But over the next 20 years her position weakened and by
the turn of the century Chile was only the third South American Country
(after Argentina and Brazil) to enter the Dreadnought battleship race. |

Lake
Tanganyika, known as "the blue heart of Africa", occupied an
important strategic position between the Belgian Congo and German Tanzania.
The lake was dominated by the 1500 ton “Goetzen” and “Hedwig von Wissmann”
and the tugboat Kingani. Two lightly armed 40ft launches were conveyed from
the Thames via Capetown to dispute control of the lake. They first captured
the Kingani which, having been refitted as flagship of the British flotilla,
then sank the von Wissman. The Goetzen was attacked by aeroplanes in port,
and scuttled. “the African Queen" by Forester was inspired by the
expedition, as was Bogart's famous film of the same name. |
