Some Land Battles Of The Ancient World Monday, 2/27/06, 3:39 AM

Arbela¿ 1 Oct., 331 B.C. Also known was Guagamela, this was the climatic battle for control of the Persian Empire between Alexander the Great and Emperor Darius II. Cannae¿ 2 Aug., 218 B.C. This was perhaps the most famous victory of Hannibal Barca over the Romans during the Second Punic War. This often studied battle became a byword for a battle of annihilation. Pharsalus¿ 9 Aug., 48 B.C. Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great square off in Greece to end the first phase of the Great Civil War. This was a tough fought action, won by the guts of Caesar¿s veterans. Teutoburger Wald¿ 9 October, 9 A.D. Arminius (a.k.a. Hermann) leads three Roman legions under Varus into an ambush, resulting in their annihilation. Roman hopes of dominion east of the Rhine died here. Issus¿?? November, 333 B.C. Alexander the Great¿s army is outmaneuvered by the Perisans and must launch a desperate assault over the Issus River to reopen their supply lines. Possibly the closest call for Alexander the Great. Carrhae¿53 B.C. An all cavalry army of Parthians under Suvneas utterly destroy Crassius¿s invading Roman army. Metaurus¿207 B.C. Hasdrubal Barca (brother of Hannibal) meets a Roman army along the Metaurus River in Spain in the Second Punic War. A flanking move by a Roman named Nero outflanks the Carthaginian force and crushes it. Idivisto¿ 15 A.D. The Romans seek to avenge the defeat of Teutoburger Wald and retrieve the eagles of the three legions destroyed there. Megiddo¿April, 1479 B.C. Pharoah Tuthmosis III of Egypt moves to crush the King of Kadesh and his allies. Qadesh¿March, 1300 B.C. Pharoah Ramasses II of Egypt gets ambushed by King Muwatallish of the Hittites near the Orontes River. Lake Transimene¿April, 217 B.C. Hannibal Barca ambushes the army of the careless Consul Flaminius. Several thousand legionaries manage to cut their way out of the trap, but the bulk of the army is destroyed. Quintus Fabius "Cuncator" will be placed in charge following this debacle. Munda¿17 March, 45 B.C. Gnaeus Pompey (son of Pompey the Great) has raised the standard of rebellion against Julius Caesar. In Spain at a place called Munda, Caesar¿s outnumbered veterans launch a desperate attack. Towcester ¿61 A.D. The legendary Celtic Queen Boudicca of the Iceni assaults a Roman camp near modern day, England. Governor Paulinus defeats her, and she commits suicide. Adrianople¿August, 378 A.D. This battle is widely considered to have been the death knell of the Western Roman Empire. Emperor Valens and 40,000 of his troops perished in a ferocious battle won by the hard charging (and numerous) Visigoth heavy cavalry. Zama¿ 202 B.C. Gnaeus Publius Scipio (Scipio the Younger) invades Africa and threatens Carthage itself. Hannibal Barca is forced to return to defend his capital. But Scipio has also arranged for the Numidians to switch sides. The two giants meet at Zama in the climax of the Second Punic War. Ilipa Granicus Marathon Thermopylae Chaeronea Pydna Bagradas Aquae Sextiae Trasimene Trebbia Cannae Heraclea Ausculum Benevento Dyrrachium Magnesia Hydaspes River Talas Caudine Forks Raphia Siege of Rhodes Siege of Alesia
